About us

Operating in the Leigh area, Gunning Education was formed with the goal of offering individual tuition combined with the benefits of a small group environment. The founder, Andrew Gunning, is an experienced teacher who specialises in teaching maths and has been a teacher for 15 years, with eight of those years as Head of Department, achieving excellent academic results.

He was also a member of the senior leadership team that led the school. He is well qualified, achieving First Class Honours in Maths and Computing and is an examiner for GCSE Maths and the Key Stage 2 SATS. This allows him to pass on his knowledge and exam tips to further increase progress and results.

He has many years of tutoring experience at all different ability levels and develops excellent relationships with learners to inspire them to become the very best that they can be.

The Learning Experience

We are all aware of the effects that the global pandemic has had on children’s education. One of the elements that learners missed was the face-to-face interaction with their teacher. That’s why, at Gunning Education, we offer a physical location for learners to visit to benefit fully from this teacher-led experience. We recognise that this may not be suitable for all learners and therefore offer remote IT-based sessions as well.

Benefits of Small Group Tutoring

Andrew is passionate about the benefits that operating in a small group environment can have and is experienced in seeing how effective the arrangement can be.

  • Higher academic achievement
  • Greater persistence and resilience
  • Better high-level reasoning and critical thinking skills
  • Deeper understanding of learned material
  • Lower levels of anxiety and stress, allowing learners to build academic self-confidence
  • Greater motivation to learn and achieve
  • Greater ability to view situations from others’ perspectives

By learning in groups of up to five, learners benefit from the fact that groups are small enough to allow individual feedback. They not only gain the skills required to solve problems but learn how to express their solutions too – a vital component in examinations and also in real-life situations.
